Welcome to Fly Fishing Times

This site is about fly fishing and celebrating the good life. I get distracted easily so you will also find some random stuff here. If this is your first time visiting, check out the fly fishing gear and beer reviews. I am still trying to get my damn brother in law to move out.

Galvan Torque Large Arbor Fly Reel Review

Over the last 14 years Galvan's built a devoted following based on their "Standard" trout reel followed by the similar but large arbor "OB - Open Back" series. The Rush and the Torque are the newest reels, and feature a redesigned drag system. In this review we look at the Galvin Torque T-6 to see if Galvin continues to impress.

Simms G3 Guide Vest Review

I have owned a number of vests, and this is the best I have owned. The G3 Vest is lightweight, comfortable and constructed from water resistant and breathable Dupont fabric. It's weight distribution excellent. You can load it full gear and wear it all day without fatigue.

Ground Hog Day - still wating on the thaw

Ground Hog Day - still wating on the thaw

Winter is a sad time for the angler in me. A time for hibernating from fly fishing. As such I am still on hiatus from updating flyfishingtimes.com with articles, reviews, etc. pending things thawing out a bit around Bozeman, Montana.

Today I reluctantly got out of bed and poked my head out the front door of my house.

I saw my shadow.

Honestly, my shadow doesn't scare me.

Snow on the ground and ice on the rivers does scare me. Or at least bring out the inner wimp in me.

I quickly retreated back into my house. Unfortunately this means at least 6 more weeks of cheep beer and cheese fondue while I ponder what I am going to write about on this site for 2009. Stay tuned - I am sure it will be fascinating.

Wait - I have more to say - please read the rest of this post!

Fishing Truck - I am jealous

Fishing Truck - I am jealousI pulled into Simms today and saw this beauty sitting out front. The truck belongs to Masa Katsumata, Simms' Asian Distributor.

One of my goals in life is to have a decent fishing truck before I die. I want to have it set up so that I can have all of my fishing gear stowed away and ready to use for quick fishing trips when I need to get away from my damn brother in law.

I wonder what sort of setup this rig has for keeping beer cold?

The economy is bad - save some money

The economy is bad - save some moneyAnother horrible week for the economy. It got me thinking - I need to stretch my dollars as far as I can. Here are two websites to help you do that. GearBuyer.com and FootwearBuyer.com. These 2 websites are like shopping search engines. They allow you to find what stores have the product you want, and which store has it at the lowest price. You can also sign up for price alerts, so that if a product goes on sale the site will notify you via email. In tough economic times, this is the smartest way to shop.

Rainier In A Can Beer Review

Rainier In A Can Beer Review

It is Friday and I am throwing down another old school fantastic fishing beer - Rainier in a can. I am also watching CNBC and getting seriously depressed by the stock market implosion that has occurred over the last week.

Seriously - WTF is going on with Wall Street? I want to go over there and kick a few of these bankers and traders in the ass.

Okay - back to lovely can of Rainier in my hand and happier thoughts.

Trout Unlimited Asks Manufacturers to Eliminate Production of Felt-Soled Waders and Equipment by 2011

Trout Unlimited Asks Manufacturers to Eliminate Production of Felt-Soled Waders and Equipment by 2011At its annual meeting today, Trout Unlimited (TU) asked fishing equipment manufacturers to stop producing felt-soled waders and wading shoes by 2011 to help stop the spread of aquatic nuisance species (ANS) by anglers in America’s rivers and streams.

Many waders, wading boots and shoes used by anglers have felt-soled bottoms that are used to provide traction while walking in water. Felt is a material that transmits aquatic nuisance species such as New Zealand mud snails, the invasive algae called didymo and the parasite that causes whirling disease, a disease fatal to trout. Felt soles can very easily become impregnated with mud and other organic matter, and become difficult or impossible to clean and disinfect.

Schmidt Beer - Remembering Greatness

Schmidt Beer - Remembering GreatnessSchmidt beer kicked ass. It was cheap, and had ducks, fish, elk, other wildlife printed on the can. It didn't matter what this beer tasted like.... the packaging was pure perfection. We used to call it "Animal Beer."

I have found memories of drinking many a "Schmidty" in my twenties. Arguing with each other about which tasted better... Schmidt with the duck on the can, or Schmidt with the elk on the can.

Schmidt is "The brew that grew with the great Northwest." It is the benchmark of what a good fishing beer should be.
